We will try to wrap up this series on ‘Ways God Speaks’ in this post. However, this topic is so broad and deep it could take another ten or more posts to cover the subject well.

In John chapter 17 we read the following:

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3

Knowing the ways God speaks really begins with knowing Him and the Lord Jesus Christ. When you know someone, you understand what they are saying, what it means, and how they are saying it.

This is what the Father desires for all of us. He longs for us to intimately know Him and His Son Jesus Christ more than anything else. After all, we will live with them for eternity if we have truly received Christ and surrender our lives to Him.

How do you get to know someone? You spend time with them, you talk with them, you go places with them, you share and exchange your thoughts, feelings, and life with them.

Then, even when words are not spoken, you understand when they are joyful, sad, disturbed, or troubled. You know them, and the more you learn about them, the easier it is to discern what they are communicating with or without words. It might be a certain look or sigh, but you can read their body language and know what it means.

Having that sensitivity can only be derived from investing much time in the relationship with that individual. It is something not easily learned or grasped. So it is with our fellowship with the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 1:3). The more we invest communicating with the Father, the more we will know Him. The more we give ourselves to the Lordship of Jesus Christ the more we will know Him.

Before we close this series, let’s look at some of the other ways God speaks to us.

The Ministry of Angels

Throughout scripture we see the ministry of angels. They are often seen bringing messages to God’s people. Here are a few examples:

1 Kings 19:5-7; 2 Kings 1:15; 1 Chronicles 21:18; Zechariah 4:5; Matthew 1:2; Luke 1:19-38; Luke 1:13-20; Acts 8:26, Acts 10:3-7

The Gifts or Manifestations of the Holy Spirit

As you read 1 Corinthians 12:1-11, you will find there are distinct types of manifestations or gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned. The Father and Jesus communicate their message, and manifest their presence, and power in the earth through these gifts of the Holy Spirit as believers yield themselves in obedience. Multiple examples can be found in scripture (Acts 13:1-3, 21:8-1; 1 Corinthians 14:31; Romans 1:11; Hebrews 2:4).

The manifestations of the Holy Spirit are one of the ways God speaks to us. Whether through a ‘Word of Knowledge,’ ‘Word of Wisdom,’ ‘Discerning of spirits,’ or one of the other gifts. We will look at these manifestations in more detail in an upcoming series as the Lord leads.

Divine Impressions

One of the nonverbal ways God speaks to us is through divine impressions in our spirit. We suddenly have a deep impression or sense of something the Father wants us to know. It could be an awareness someone is lying, has wrong intentions, or is not trustworthy. When this happens, it is best to stop and ask the Father for more details, wisdom, and understanding.

Audible Voice

Although rare, God sometimes speaks through an audible voice.

1) Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2) and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

3) As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4) Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" 5) And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

6) So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." 7) And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. 8) Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. Acts 9:3-8

The Peace of God

A prominent way God often communicates with us is through His peace. We may need direction or wisdom on a situation and seek the Father for His guidance. Sometimes it comes as a supernatural peace that floods our spirit and soul. It is not a natural peace that we may experience when things are going well and there is no chaos around us. This peace can come during the midst of a stormy season in our life, and it comforts us to know God is working our behalf and we can rest in Him.

Signs and Wonders

God can also speak to us through signs and wonders (Exodus 3:1-4), symbols (Hosea 12:10), and even nature (Numbers 22:28).

Songs

During early morning prayer, I was reminded of one more way God speaks that may seem unusual to some but is substantiated in scripture. We often think of singing songs to the Father and the Lord Jesus, but they sing songs over us as well. (Deuteronomy 32:44; Zephaniah 3:17).

The Father is the author of music, and He often will put a song on our hearts to communicate a message of His love, grace, mercy, and provision. The next time you hear a praise song or hymn ‘looping’ repeatedly in your spirit, stop and thank the Father for speaking to you in such a tender manner and begin to sing the song out loud.

As we familiarize ourselves with these methods and ways God speaks to us, we will grow in grace and become more sensitive to His leading and guidance and enjoy closer fellowship with Him.

We have only covered some basic principles on this topic but will move on to a new subject in our next post. Until then, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ richly bless and keep you!
