We have been examining ways God speaks and have looked at hearing God or receiving His communication through the ‘Word,’ the ‘still small voice,’ and the ‘witness of the Spirit.’

Today we will continue looking at the witness of the Spirit because this is one of the chief means the Father communicates with our spirit.

On the Road to Emmaus

13) Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. 14) And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

15) So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16) But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

17) And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?" 18) Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, "Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?"

19) And He said to them, "What things?" So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20) and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.

21) But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22) Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23) When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.

 24) And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see."

25) Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26) Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?"

27) And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

28) Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. 29) But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them.

30) Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31) Then their eyes were opened, and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32) And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" Luke 24:13-32

Notice this last verse gives us a glimpse of what transpired within these two individuals while Jesus spoke to them. Although they did not recognize Him, their heart perceived something supernatural taking place as He spoke. There was some type of witness, testimony, evidence within their spirit that convinced them Jesus was speaking divine truths that were not mere words or man’s philosophy.

The Greek word kaiō, used in this passage, is translated ‘burn’ but also ‘light’ ‘burning’ or ‘burned.’ There was a divine illumination, burning glow, and impartation on the inside of these two disciples that was measurably noticeable. This was not just a physical sensation, but a spiritual reality and awakening that took place in their hearts.

13) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak and he will shew you things to come. 14) He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15) All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. John 16:13-15 KJV

God illuminates our spirit to guide our steps. We must learn to pay close attention to what He is communicating to our spirit and follow His lead. We are spirit beings with a soul (mind, emotion, will) and live in a physical body. God is a Spirit (John 4:24) and communicates with us in our spirit.

The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the inner depths of his heart. Proverbs 20:27

14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15) For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." 16) The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…. Romans 8:14-16

The apostle John wrote to his disciples and said:

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1 John 2:27

When you and I sense the anointing of God in our spirit, we should stop to take note of what He is saying or communicating to our understanding. When we do not sense the anointing in our spirit, we should take note the Father may not be leading us in a certain direction because there is no “witness” or evidence from the Holy Spirit who is our anointing from God (Acts 1:8;5:32;10:38).

Much more can be said on this subject, yet these blogs are not exhaustive studies, but inspirational nuggets to enhance your knowledge in Christ, and stir you to seek the Father for a deeper understanding and revelation of His word.

We will continue to look at the ways God speaks in our next post. Until then, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ richly bless and keep you!
