The ABCs 5
The Word of God is the foundation for every true Christian believer. It is our source of understanding of God and His ways. Every prophet and writer of scripture stood on the validity and inerrancy of the written Word of God and not their feelings, opinion, or the latest buzz of their generation.
When Jesus was tempted by the devil during His 40 day and night fast in the wilderness, He quoted scripture as a spiritual weapon (Ephesians 6:17b).
1) Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2) And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
3) Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
4) But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.' "
5) Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6) and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'HE SHALL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE OVER YOU,' and, IN THEIR HANDS THEY SHALL BEAR YOU UP, LEST YOU DASH YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.' "
7) Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'YOU SHALL NOT TEMPT THE LORD YOUR GOD.' "
8) Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9) And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."
10) Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND HIM ONLY YOU SHALL SERVE.' " 11) Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. (Matthew 4:1-11)
The apostles always pointed believers to the scriptures. They quoted them in their messages to the churches. They acted upon them in their obedience to God and the Lord Jesus Christ. They depended upon the revelation of God’s Word for the success and accuracy of their ministries.
During his final face to face address to the leaders and elders of the church in Ephesus, Paul said:
So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:32
Before his execution at Rome, he admonished his son in the faith, Timothy, to preach the Word.
1) I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2) Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4) and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. (2 Timothy 4:1-4)
The Word of God is our road map. It not only guides us through this life, but gives us insight of the Father’s plan (from Genesis to Revelation) to dwell among His people, and prepares us for our eternal purpose in Christ Jesus for the ages to come.
The Bible is made up of 66 books that were written over a span of approximately 1500 years by over 40 inspired kings, prophets, apostles, and scholars. It has been recognized as the best-selling book of all time, and has been translated into thousands of different languages and dialects around the world.
Other non-biblical sources (such as Josephus) point to the validity of scripture and even today, archeologists are still finding verifiable proof of what Biblical text has stated for thousands of years. God has watched over His Word to perform it in every generation since the time of Moses.
Jesus told His disciples and followers,
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. Matthew 24:35
God’s Word is a sure footing for our lives. As we obey it, we will be able to stand in times of storm and tribulation. It will not always be easy, but the Word will be a solid rock to sustain us.
24) "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25) and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26) "But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27) and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall." Matthew 7:24-27
Next time, as we continue our study on the ABCs of the faith, we will cover more on the importance of the Word of God. Until then, may God our Heavenly Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ richly bless and keep you.
