Ways God Speaks 2

Once we accept the fundamental truth that God wants to speak to us, we can begin to learn the ways He speaks or communicates.

Many years ago, a prophetic friend told me, “The Lord speaks to you, but you don’t recognize it.” Ouch!!!

I think this has been the experience for most of us. The Father or the Lord Jesus speaks or communicates something to us, but we are too dull of hearing or distracted with other voices or things.

One way we can increase our hearing is to spend time in the Word of God. Reading, meditating, and memorizing the Word will give us a greater sensitivity to the WAY God speaks.

As we look at scripture, we can see how He spoke to others and look for Him to do the same with us. Also, we will learn His WAYS and become familiar with His thoughts and principles. We will begin to understand His ways are established in truth, mercy, love, grace, peace, righteousness, and holiness, and realize anything apart from these qualities is probably not Him speaking to us.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and not hypocritical. James 3:17

When we spend time in the Word of God we will begin to be transformed in our thinking and manner of life. The Word will become a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path (Psalms 119:105).

The apostle Paul instructed his son in the faith to preach the Word and to give attention to reading it to his flock.

1) I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:  2) Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4) and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 2 Timothy 4:1-4

The Word of God (Logos) is one of the chief ways God speaks to His people. This is why He commanded the gospel to be preached (Mark 16:15; Romans 10:8-17), and church leaders to continually teach the scripture (2 Timothy 4:2; Colossians 3:16; Titus 2:1).

Jesus always spoke reverently and authoritatively about the scripture. He often referred to it when speaking to the Jews and pointed to its accuracy and validity.

46) For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47) But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"   John 5:46-47

We can see here the value of knowing the scripture in learning to hear the voice of God and knowing how He speaks or communicates in other ways.

The psalmist underscored the importance of the word of God and wrote about its ability to illuminate our path and guide us along the way.

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. Psalms 119:105

Ask the Father for a renewed love for His Word. Spend time reading, meditating, and acting upon it. This will be your greatest foundation for hearing the voice of God and having encounters with Him.

Until then, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ richly bless and keep you!
